Mold Remediation Process: Step-by-Step Guide

Having mold in your home can be scary. While it’s a problem that needs to be addressed immediately, it’s absolutely something that can be fixed.

ERI Consulting is here to help you remove the mold from your home. Here’s what the process looks like.

Consultation and Scheduling

The first step in this process is finding the mold. You want to make sure that all the mold is caught at once; otherwise, it can grow, and you’ll need mold remediation services again.

Mold removal pros will come to your home to see what’s going on and develop a plan of action. Then, an appointment will be scheduled.

Visit Your Home or Business

Mold pros will show up in full gear for safety. No one wants to inhale mold spores, and working in close proximity to mold can be hazardous to your health. Once the pros are suited up, they’ll get to work.

Containment

Mold removal pros will seal off the affected area. Mold can easily travel, so we contain it in the smallest area that we possibly can to prevent continued spread.

Pros, counterintuitively, use moisture to suppress the spread of mold. The moisture is what keeps the mold in the contained area and prevents it from spreading.

Removal of Affected Areas

In smaller mold issues, you can usually treat it yourself. However, larger problems require the pros to come out, treat the issue, and remove all affected areas. This can include drywall, carpeting, insulation, and even furniture.

Leaving anything with mold on it–no matter how small–risks continued spread. Mold remediation techs will dispose of everything removed.

Cleaning

Sometimes, we can’t remove the affected areas. In those cases, we use industrial-grade cleaners to kill the mold. Mold removal pros have special tools for this part of the remediation process.

Restoration

While we can’t restore all items affected by mold, we can restore some. In some cases, clothes, electronics, photos, and other personal items can be restored. While our restoration technology is much better than that of the past, there’s never a guarantee of success.

Encapsulation

The pros will start by using a chemical approved by the EPA to kill spores. After that chemical has been laid, your home will be encapsulated. Encapsulation prevents mold from coming back, ultimately preventing future mold infestations.

Sanitizing

After the mold has been handled, the team will take down all sheeting from doors and windows and use a HEPA-approved vacuum cleaner to remove any spores still remaining.

Drying

We’ll run fans and dryers throughout your home or business to make sure every inch is fully dried, and the mold won’t come back.

Final Inspection

After everything is done, a technician will walk through the space one final time to ensure all the previous steps were done correctly. The tech will test airborne samples and humidity levels to make sure the mold doesn’t come back.
